Lairg is located in the centre of Sutherland, only one hour’ drive from Inverness. Although the village is served by public transport, it is worth noting that service frequency may be not fit your planned itinerary. Lairg is served by a station on the Far North Line between Inverness and Wick/Thurso. Taking approx 1 hour 45 mins to reach Lairg, the railway journey is a fantastic way to see the stunning countryside of Ross-shire and Sutherland. Lairg railway station is located 2 miles from the centre of the village, however the station is served by local transport links. The post bus service to the North and Northwest connects with the train that arrives into Lairg about midday. There is a taxi company in the village and a local bus service connects with the train, however we would advise you research your transport into the village before your arrival. Driving to Lairg and cycling are the most popular ways to reach the village. Situated on the A836 from the South and the A839 from the East, the village is easily accessible by road. The National Cycle route from Landsend to John O’Groats passes through Lairg, making it an ideal place to stop and recuperate before heading north through the challenging terrain of Strathnaver. There is a frequent bus service to Tain operated by Macleod’s Coaches which connects daily with the buses heading towards Inverness. Macleod’s Coaches also operate a bus service to Golspie, Brora & Helmsdale. Post Buses operate from Lairg to Tongue, Talmine, Lochinver and Drumbeg, and there is a daily service leaving from Lairg Post Office to Durness & Kinlochbervie.
